🏮 About Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival (春节), is the most important traditional holiday in China and many other Asian countries. It marks the beginning of the new year on the lunar calendar and is celebrated with family reunions, feasts, fireworks, and red decorations symbolizing good fortune.
The festival lasts for 15 days, from New Year's Eve to the Lantern Festival. Key traditions include: cleaning the house to sweep away bad luck, putting up red couplets and lanterns, giving red envelopes (hongbao) with money, eating dumplings and nian gao (sticky rice cake), and watching the CCTV New Year's Gala.
🐲 Legend of Nian
According to legend, a ferocious beast named Nian (年) would come to villages on New Year's Eve to devour people and livestock. The villagers discovered that Nian feared the color red, loud noises, and fire. So they put up red paper on their doors, lit firecrackers, and beat drums to scare the beast away. These traditions evolved into the Chinese New Year celebrations we know today.
